What to Expect on a Half-Day Canyoning Adventure at Tui Canyon Near Christchurch
Waterfalls, abseiling, ziplines, natural rock slides and a whole lot of fun!
Ever wondered what canyoning is all about?
Imagine making your way down a beautiful stream, abseiling waterfalls, sliding down smooth rocks, ziplining over the water and exploring places you'd never normally get to see.
That's canyoning!
And if you've never tried it before, Tui Canyon is a fantastic place to start.
But don't let the words beginner-friendly fool you. Tui Canyon still packs a punch!
It's one heck of a canyon, with all the elements of a full-day canyoning adventure packed into half the time. You'll abseil, zipline, slide, scramble and explore your way downstream, with plenty of excitement and a few challenges along the way.
Located at Glentui Reserve, north of Christchurch, Tui Canyon is perfect for adventurous beginners, families and anyone looking to squeeze a proper outdoor adventure into half a day.
Here's what you can expect!
1. Meeting Your Guides at Glentui Reserve
Your adventure begins at Glentui Reserve, a beautiful spot tucked into the foothills of Canterbury, north of Christchurch.
We'll meet you at the designated meeting point, where you'll get to know your guides and the other adventurers joining you for the trip.
Your guides will get you fitted out with all the specialist canyoning equipment you need, including a wetsuit, helmet, harness and canyoning footwear.
Don't worry if you've never worn a harness or abseiled before. We'll explain everything as we go.
Once everyone's geared up, it's time to head towards the canyon!
2. A Short Walk Into the Adventure
One of the great things about Tui Canyon is that you don't have to spend hours hiking to reach the good stuff.
It's just a short, approximately five-minute walk from where we gear up to the canyon entrance.
Surrounded by native bush, you'll quickly feel like you've left the everyday world behind.
Before entering the canyon, your guides will run through a full safety briefing, explain how the equipment works and show you what to expect.
And then we're off!
3. Starting With an Abseil
There's no easing into this adventure!
One of the first few challenges at Tui Canyon is an abseil.
If you've never abseiled before, this might sound a little intimidating, but don't worry. Our experienced guides will talk you through the process, explain what to do and support you throughout.
For many guests, this is their first time abseiling, and it's often one of those moments they feel pretty proud of afterwards.
Once you're down, the adventure is just getting started!
4. Sliding, Ziplining and Exploring Tui Canyon
Now it's time to make our way downstream!
Tui Canyon is a natural playground, with a great mix of activities along the way.
Natural rock slides: Let the water carry you down smooth rock formations and splash into the pools below.
Ziplining: One of the highlights of Tui! Clip in and fly through the canyon, with a pretty spectacular view along the way.
Jumps: There are opportunities for small jumps into the water if you're feeling keen. But jumping is never compulsory.
Scrambling and exploring: Between the bigger challenges, we'll make our way through the stream, over rocks and through some beautiful sections of canyon.
And of course, there are plenty of opportunities for a good laugh along the way.
That's one of the things we love about Tui. It's a proper canyoning adventure with a bit of everything, just packed into a shorter day.
One minute you're concentrating on a challenge, the next you're laughing your way down a natural rock slide or flying through the air on a zipline.
5. Beginner-Friendly, But Still Packs a Punch!
One of the questions we often get asked is whether you need to have tried canyoning before.
The answer is no!
Tui Canyon is a great introduction to canyoning, but that doesn't mean it's an easy stroll down a stream.
You'll be navigating slippery rocks, moving through flowing water, abseiling and tackling different challenges as you make your way downstream.
It's an active, hands-on adventure that requires a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to give things a go.
Our guides will explain each challenge and help you along the way, so you're not expected to arrive knowing how to abseil or navigate a canyon.
And remember, you don't have to jump off anything you don't want to.
For many guests, it's the perfect balance of excitement, challenge and fun.
6. Wrapping Up the Adventure
After approximately three hours exploring the canyon, we'll make our way back to where we started, get changed and pack up our equipment.
By now, there's usually a fair bit of laughter, a few tired legs and plenty of stories about everyone's favourite moments.
It's a great opportunity to reflect on what you've just accomplished, especially if you've tried something completely new. We'll share stories over a snack and a beverage and then send you on your way.
And the best part? You've still got the rest of the day to explore Christchurch!
7. Take the Memories Home
We know it's not always practical to pull out your phone when you're sliding down a waterfall or flying along a zipline.
That's why we include an edited highlights video of your canyoning adventure.
It's all part of the experience, with no extra charge.
So you can focus on having fun while we capture some of the moments you'll want to remember.
